We have renamed our podcast to match the new branding of our blog. âLubetkin on Communicationsâ better captures the goal of our blog and podcast series, which is to provide a forum for discussion of important communications and public relations issues with newsmakers in the field.

I was doing public relations for Conrail. Conrail was the contract operator of commuter rail service for NJ Transit in New Jersey when I was assigned to make the arrangements for Davidâs engine ride. Davidâs journey to New Jersey to ride GG-1 #4884 and pick up his painting from Grif Tellerâs Little Falls, NJ, studio were the subject of an extensive article in Trains Magazine in December 1981.

During the past 15 years, Mr. Tilden has held senior leadership roles in three Philadelphia area companies.  From 1994â1996, he was a senior executive with Alco Standard (now known as Ikon Office Solutions). Alco was a Fortune 500 office products and distribution company based in Wayne, PA.  He then joined InterDigital Communications, where he was a member of the senior executive team of that King of Prussia-based wireless technology developer for 10 years.  He served as the companyâs Chief Operating Officer from 2001â2005.  More recently, he led a multi-million dollar fitness and wellness business in West Chester as its general manager. 

Mr. Tilden earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from DePauw University in 1975 and his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1982.

A psychologist, nationally certified school psychologist, graduate school professor and university professor of pediatrics, Dr. Selznick has great sensitivity for the topic. Dr. Selznick has consulted with thousands of families over the years on the issues related to The Shut-Down Learner. Included in the book are numerous case studies drawn from vast professional experiences.

As Director of the Cooper Learning Center, Dr. Selznick oversees a program that assesses and treats a broad range of learning and school-based academic and behavioral problems. The Cooper Learning Center is a Division of the Department of Pediatrics, of Cooper University Hospital. The Hospital is a leading teaching hospital in the region. With its affiliation to UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey), many of its faculty are represented as among the best in the region. The Cooper Learning Center was established by Dr. Selznick within the Pediatric Department in 1995. It is the leading program in the region offering a variety of different services, including parent and teacher training along with its clinical practice.

Dr. Selznick additionally works as a school consultant, and is asked to lecture frequently to parents and teachers on a variety of different topics. Throughout the year, Dr. Selznick speaks to numerous parent groups through schools, regional conferences, and lectures at Cooper University Hospital and the newly established Cooper Center for Women. Popular topics of Dr. Selznickâs include: âMythâs & Realities of Dyslexia,â âDealing With Bullying: Is Your Child a Shark or Shark Meat,â âParenting Dilemmas: Regaining Control of the Ship,â âManaging Your ADHD in College,â among many others. In the spring of 2007, Dr. Selznick spoke to over 200 teachers on the topic of the Shut- Down Learner and the signs to notice in early childhood. Known for presenting with humor and a down to earth style, Dr. Selznick offers his audience an enjoyable experience, with practical and very applicable strategies for the challenging issues they are faced with their children.

Dr. Selznick has been invited to appear on radio and television to discuss a variety of childrenâs issues. Within the last year, Dr. Selznick appeared on the nationally syndicated Lynne Doyle show, âItâs Your Call.â The topic of discussion was whether same-sex schools were advantageous.

In the summer of 2007, Dr. Selznick was an invited guest on the Michael Smerconish radio show (1210 WPHT) to discuss the current trend of âredshirtingâ kindergarten students.

On December 31, 2008, the Israeli Consulate General in New York hosted a "citizens' press conference" and invited interested parties to send the Consulate questions about the recent Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip, using the social media website Twitter.com. This is probably the first time a country's diplomats have embraced the use of Twitter for outreach to audiences for their messaging.

For those not familiar with it, Twitter is a microblogging website where users communicate with their friends or "followers" in terse, 140-character messages designed to fit the text messaging function of cell phones in a way that makes the communications tool highly portable.

Social media initiatives embraced by the Israeli Consulate also include a Facebook page, a MySpace presence, a blog about Israeli life and culture, a blog about Israeli politics, and a YouTube channel. The transcript of the Twitter press conference is hosted on the political blog.

In this podcast, we talk with David Saranga, Consul for Media and Public Affairs at the Israeli Consulate General.

Before joining the consulate, David served as Deputy Spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel, and was responsible for contact with the foreign media. He previously served in Israelâs embassies in Romania and Spain.

As Consul for Media and Public Affairs, David Saranga is responsible for having direct contact with Americaâs New York-based national media, and for public relations. One of his jobâs main goals is to show the real face of Israel, that which lies beyond the news headlines. One of the innovative tools he uses to do this is this Blog.

Consul Saranga has both extensive academic and private sector experience.
He was a Manager of the Direct Marketing Department, Visa-Israel Credit Cards and worked as National Sales Executive at Kidum Ltd.

Consul Saranga has been engaged as an academic since 1989, when he worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Hebrew University. Subsequent work has included one year as Director of Studies and Lecturer in Marketing Management at the Open University in Israel.

In the forthcoming Fall issue of Attitudes, the semi-annual color magazine of the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey (on newsstands in early November), I'll have an article about Iceland as a travel destination. In this podcast conversation with Hjörtur Smárason, we update the economic situation in Iceland and talk about how Icelanders are coping with their changed status. Hjortur is an Icelandic social media and marketing consultant who also authors several blogs in Icelandic, and one, Marketing Safari, in English. Recently, he's focused some of his blogging on the emotional and economic impact of the credit crunch on Iceland.

For podcast #6, in the series, we interview two student journalists who will be participating in the on-site student-run newsroom covering the conference.

Alex Kowalski is a junior news-editorial major at UNC-Chapel Hill. He writes for campus newspapers, magazines and his food blog, readthebiscuit.com. Although he would one day like to work in print journalism, he has found a new niche in online journalism. With experience as an intern at cqpolitics.com this summer and (hopefully) a computer science minor, he would like to develop news sites and interactive Web-based applications. His current project is launching chapelhillvoice.com, an online-only news site for his campus. When Alex is not toiling over Oxford commas or lines of php code, he is out rowing for the university's crew team.

Abby Selden is a junior at Belmont University in Nashville. She produces print and video content for Belmont's student news site and spent last summer as an Editorial Intern at Journal Communications, Inc., custom magazine media. She also writes articles for the Nashville Mayor's Homelessness Commission Online Newsletter.

As the Peer Tutor for a Belmont broadcasting class, Abby taught new students how to write scripts and edit video.

A Birmingham, Ala., native, Abby is an Honors Program student, member of Alpha Chi Honor Society and recipient of the 1st place award in On-Site News Writing at the 2007 Southeast Journalism Conference. Abby enjoys song-writing, movie trivia and volunteering at a local family homeless shelter.

Hauser, who formerly held executive positions at AOL, Venevision and the Cisneros Group of Companies, is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of DailyMe, a new news service that provides personalized media content from thousands of sources for consumers. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Hauser brings nearly two decades of experience in media and technology to his Board role. He was Executive Vice President of AOL Latin America. He also was Managing Director of the Cisneros Group of Companies and Vice President of News and Information for Cisneros' Venevision, the world's second largest producer of Spanish language programming. Hauser founded DailyMe in 2005. It is a free news service that combines the top attributes of online newspapers, news portals and traditional print media, and aggregates and customizes content from more than 3200 sources including licensed, syndicated and user-generated outlets. Hauser serves on NPR's Board of Directors, the Journalism Advisory Board of the Knight Foundation and the Board of Visitors of Duke University School of Law.

Webb began her career as a reporter with Newsweek in its Tokyo bureau and at the Asian Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong where she covered technology, media and culture. She has been on the adjunct journalism faculty at University of Maryland, Temple University, Tokyo University and University of the Arts and is currently associated with the International Center for Journalists, where she creates training programs and seminars for journalists around the world. Webb holds a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, a bachelor's in political economics from Indiana University and Nikyu Certification in the Japanese government-administered Language Proficiency Test. He was also the Head Writer and Senior Producer for Nickelodeon Online. A graduate of Emerson College, Joel is also an award-winning essayist and screenwriter.

Joel is a featured blogger for the Star Ledger's news blog, NJ Voices.

In 2008, he won 2nd place in the National Society of Newspaper Columnists' Column-Writing Competition, and is currently a nominee for "Best Commentary" from the 2008 Online News Association Awards.

Previously, she was assistant managing editor at Stateline.org, an online news site that she helped create. Before that, Shackelford held positions at the Democratic Leadership Council, Progressive Policy Institute, Culligan Water and Nordstrom. A 1996 graduate of East Carolina University, Shackelford studied creative writing and visual art and has done post-graduate work at Marymount University.

In one of the most comprehensive studies of New Jerseyâs business climate conducted to date, NJPRO surveyed business leaders, compared the ways other states retain and attract firms, and recommended short- and long-term policies New Jersey can adopt to make its business environment friendlier. The report, available at NJPRO's website, summarizes the results of a 249-respondent survey and one-on-one interviews with 29 business and economic development leaders. Additionally, we compile rankings of state business climates and highlight the business policies of five highly-rated states.

NJPRO also makes 37 policy recommendations to help improve the stateâs business climate â short- and long-term actions in areas such as tax, regulatory, infrastructure, health care and liability laws.

Only the Delaware River separates NJ,PA and DE geographically, but they are worlds apart in their laws regulating the workplace. NJ places greater burdens and restrictions on employers, while providing employees with many additional remedies and causes of action. PA provides employees with fewer causes of action, but does present greater risks and liabilities as to some areas of employment law -- such as wage payment and collection. And it's a "small wonder" that DE, just down the river, has its own set of rules, too.  Further muddying the waters are the procedural and administrative differences in initiating employment discrimination claims in each jurisdiction.

This panel discussion identified key areas of concern and helps counsel to companies with operations in all three states navigate the variations in state law.

Wal-Mart Helps Raise $20,000 through Partnership

with Muscular Dystrophy Association

âBowl for a Cure Challengeâ fund-raiser and store grants each contribute to grand total

STRATFORD, NJ (June 8, 2008) â Ten hours of non-stop bowling means more funding for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and ever-lasting pride for Wal-Mart associates.

Wal-Martâs Market 279 â of Southern New Jersey â recently teamed with the MDA to host âBowl for a Cure Challenge,â at La Martinque Lanes in Stratford, where market team members bowled for 10 straight hours to earn pledges from corporate sponsors.

Stores within the market contributed $10,000 from their community grant funds to the MDA, while sponsors of the event matched the donation â pledging $1,000 for each hour associates bowled â bringing the grand total to $20,000.

âWeâre very grateful to Wal-Mart for their continued generosity and tireless efforts in making this event a success,â said Melanie Morgan, program director for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. âThrough partnerships like these, the MDA is able to continue to provide hope and solutions to the countless Americans afflicted with these diseases.â
